Mayor Garcetti and MTA Board Votes to Raise Bus Fares
Despite having a five billion dollar a year budget of tax payers money, the Los Angeles MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority) board has voted to raise bus fares across the board-with the exception of student passes. A monthly bus pass which is currently seventy five dollars a month, starting September 1, 2014 will cost one hundred dollars a month. With a five billion dollar a year budget of tax payers money Mayor Garcetti and the MTA somehow could not find the thirty six million dollars needed-which would have prevent the fare increase. By MTA’s own admission, ninety percent of bus and rail riders are minorities, in effect MTA’s fare increase will disproportionately impact minorities.
