Carla Gonzalez On Training High School Students As Community Organizers
Carla is a community rights activist and co-founder and leader of the Summer Youth Organizing Academy (SYOA). Carla has been doing amazing work recruiting and training young high school age organizers for many years now from many of LA’s inner city high schools.
Carla Gonzalez was born and raised in LA’s immigrant El Salvadoran community. For the past five years she has been organizing in five of LA’s working class, urban public high schools as part of the Community Rights Campaign, a project of the Strategy Center. She also helped found and lead the Center’s Summer Youth Organizing Academy, now in its fifth year. SYOA is an intensive summer organizer training program that has graduated over 100 high school students.
